This title examines the positions of artist, dancer, photographer, and curator. The duties and responsibilities of the professional in each of these occupations are examined. Through profiles of artist Dane Picard, dancer Elaine Wang, photographer Heather Cantrell, and curator Julie Joyce, readers will get the sense of an artist's life. Readers will learn about daily life in the arts, average salaries, and educational requirements and steps to securing one of these positions. Readers will learn what characteristics and interests make for a successful career in the arts, and a short self-evaluation analyses the prospective artist's potential for success in the field. Also included are evaluations of each profession's potential market, and how to find work. Inside the Industry is a series in Essential Library, an imprint of ABDO Publishing Company.

Each book describes four careers; for example, Arts covers artist, dancer, photographer, and curator. Readers learn what each job entails (e.g., "What Is an Artist?") and what they can do to prepare for these competitive professions ("Would You Make a Good Artist?"). The bland texts, accompanied by young-person-heavy stock photos, could be useful as very general introductions to the title careers. Reading list, websites. Glos., ind.

Gr 8 Up-While the descriptions of each career are detailed-including information on what it entails, the work environment, the job market, a day in the life of a professional, and questions about the job-the books might be limiting to students wanting a more general introduction to the field. For instance, they might want to know what it's like to be a general physician as opposed to a more specialized doctor. The books are illustrated with captioned photographs of people engaged in their work. Each one has a healthy amount of back matter with information on getting your foot in the door, professional organizations, and market facts (skills needed, annual wages, related jobs, etc.). Decent additions.-Sarah K. Allen, Elko Middle School, Sandston, VA
