Dorf is all about skateboarding and so far that's worked out fine.

But now that he's in a new city, the terrain has changed. He's no longer free to skateboard where he wishes, school is more difficult, and his passion for skateboarding garners him the nickname and reputation of a freak. With daring stunts he gains the grudging respect of local troublemakers, but he needs to tap into another kind of courage to effect real change.

This short novel is a high-interest, low-reading level book for middle-grade readers who are building reading skills, want a quick read or say they don't like to read! The epub edition of this title is fully accessible. Also available in French as Accro d'la planche.

Insights gained atop a skateboard lead young Quinn to take charge not only of his own life but those of his separated parents, too. A sudden move into town with his unemployed father leaves Quinn feeling like an outsidereven in the local skating park, where, despite his expertise, he gets a cold reception and ispushed into falls by a bully. Being a loner and a chronic underachiever, he is headed for failure in school, too. Then he meets Jasmine, a fine skateboarder herself, who sees something in him and offers to help with his schoolwork. Weathering challenges gives Quinn the confidence he needs to get his academic act together and to persuade his parents to give their relationship another try. This is a decidedly purposeful tale, butkids will relate to both Quinns troubles and solutions. Though thin on skateboard action and lingo, thebooks small trim size and brief chapters may draw reluctant readers.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2008, American Library Association.)

Quinn Dorfman feels like a loser in his new town. But when he meets fellow skateboarder Jasmine, his worries--about his mother's extended absence and his troubles at school--begin to diminish. This brief novel aimed at reluctant teen readers suffers from some stereotypical characters.
